Cleaning a Chantilly Lace Wedding Gown After the Big Day
A bride brought us her all-over Chantilly lace gown from Mon Amie Bridal Salon with a hem and train gray from the reception floor. Here is how we brought the delicate lace back to bright ivory.
The Gown and the Damage
This gown came to us from a bride who found it at Mon Amie Bridal Salon in Costa Mesa, one of Orange County's best known bridal boutiques. It is covered in delicate Chantilly lace from bodice to train, with a fine scalloped eyelash edge along the hem. After the ceremony, photos, and a night on the dance floor, the entire lower third of the dress had turned gray. Dirt was ground into the lace edge, the train lining was streaked and soiled, and the tulle underlayers had picked up grime everywhere the dress touched the ground.
Why Chantilly Lace Needs Special Care
Chantilly lace is one of the most fragile fabrics we handle. The pattern sits on a fine net ground that can snag, tear, or distort with any rough handling, and the eyelash fringe along the hem is even more delicate. Machine agitation or aggressive spotting can shred it. The lace also sits over satin and tulle layers that each respond differently to cleaning, so the whole gown has to be treated as several fabrics at once, not one.
Our Process for This Gown
We inspected every panel and mapped the soiling first, then treated the hem and train by hand with gentle, fabric-specific solutions that release ground-in dirt without stressing the net. The lace layers, satin lining, and tulle were each cleaned according to their own fiber content, then the gown was carefully finished and steamed so the lace lies naturally with no distortion. No harsh bleaching, no machine agitation, just patient hand work.
The Result
The hem and train came back to the same bright ivory as the rest of the dress, with the scalloped lace edge fully intact and every bit of the eyelash detail preserved. The gown is now ready for the bride to preserve, resell, or pass down, whichever she chooses.
